Project Showcase: “See it, Say it, Sort it?”

Liu’s project, “See it, Say it, Sort it?”, merges craft and photography to investigate the coexistence of humans and natural resources. Wood, a recurring element in his work, symbolizes pressing issues related to nature and sustainability.Through a blend of satire and humor, Liu’s pieces address the misuse of wood in daily life, highlighting the impact of individual actions on nature and its resources. The project reflects the ongoing exploitation of natural resources. In his works, Liu presents seemingly absurd scenarios—such as tree bark being extracted from a tissue box, nails being hammered backward into a wooden mallet, and environmental activists wearing wooden medals. These acts, while appearing nonsensical, reveal truths about contemporary society.

Artist’s Reflection: Seeing, Talking, Solving?

Liu’s work goes beyond artistic expression to provoke thought on societal and environmental issues. Despite growing awareness of environmental protection, there remains a long road ahead, as implied by his theme “See it, Say it, Sort it?” People may discuss and acknowledge environmental issues, but are they genuinely addressing them?Liu’s art vividly underscores the current state and critical issues, emphasizing the continued destructive behavior towards nature.

Artistic Approach: Deconstruction and Reconstruction

Liu’s methodology involves deconstructing and reconstructing everyday objects to highlight their intrinsic essence. His use of humor and satire aims to spark questioning and reflection on contemporary environmental issues. By encouraging audiences to reconsider the symbolic meanings and uses of objects, Liu seeks to inspire deeper contemplation of sustainability and the human-nature relationship.

The Artist’s Responsibility: Engaging with Social and Cultural Issues

For Liu, art is not just about self-expression but also about addressing social and cultural concerns. He believes that artists today must engage with current events, respond to social phenomena, and express critical or supportive stances through their work. Art should resonate with audiences and offer new ways of thinking about the future.
